Building WordPress Themes: Directory & Template Structure

Hopefully someone finds this helpful as I’ve had to figure out some of this as I go or just from trial and error. There aren’t a lot of resources for building themes that really spell things out, so it’s good to look at what others are doing. This post is more basic directory structure and not much code beyond organizing theme specific functions.

Core Thoughts
The whole point is to reduce bloat while increasing utility. Make it easy to develop in for yourself and for any future development to happen even if its not by you. Basically… K.I.S.S.
Directory Structure
First I’m going to overview my directory structure of a basic theme.
Basic Theme Structure
- theme-folder
- css
- js
- imgs
- inc
- index.php
- functions.php
- style.css
You can definitely get further organized with this by putting your js, css, and images in an /assets/ folder. You can even drill deeper with specific folders for files like page templates and template parts. Not all sites need that much organization, but if you’re building something with a lot of layouts that are wildly different you may want to organize better.
Including Functions
Used to I would dump everything in functions.php until I graduated to including them in an array, which was only slightly more helpful in terms of it was neater looking and easier to navigate. That looked something like this:
https://gist.github.com/bmoredrew/8278090
But that’s not optimal because you have to manage each file. This is all preference but what I do now is include everything from the /inc/ or /lib/ (or whatever you want to call it) folder. So my functions.php is just a few lines and grabs my entire folder:
https://gist.github.com/theandystratton/5924570
(stolen from @theandystratton)
Template Structure
I’ve noticed with a lot of “off the shelf” themes each template will have a name (and therefor appear as a selectable layout), and maybe that’s for flexibility purposes, but I prefer to only have a few where needed. Usually Full Width and any Landing pages will get a template name, otherwise I want them to auto assign appropriately. One way you can do this is by understanding proper hierarchy.
The Template Hierarchy
Generally a pretty basic site only has a few templates to consider:
- Front Page
- Interior Page
- Full Width Page
- Blog Page
- Single Blog Page
Which you should be referring to the Template Hierarchy Map. It will probably end up looking something like this:
Index.php As a Workhorse
If you look at the template hierarchy map again you’ll see everything eventually waterfalls to Index.php It makes sense to take advantage of index for templates that are sharing a layout. I’ll have designers that want to change things on 404 pages, search results pages, etc. Generally these end up being full width pages so I can re-use my full-width layout in my index for multiple pages.
Take-away Points
- Don’t over organize unless you have to
- Adhere to your own standards for coding and structure
- Easy on the template names in files, let the template hierarchy work for you
- Find ways to keep things lean by having utility files

Things to Consider When Using Parallax Scrolling in Website Design

This means that you should be careful when designing your website, which is the window to your business 24/7. We have discussed this repeatedly whether a website user or even a visitor would want to stick on a little longer on your website, if it has nothing new to offer. Let’s think of another situation where you have been using a website that has been copied from your competitor’s and there is nothing that you could say here is unique. Do you think anyone will want to stick around?
The new cool is to cut the crap and devise new ideas to design your websites. And, these new ideas should be indeed new! The experience and interaction (UX and UI) that a user had while they were on your website is something that needs to be worked upon to ensure that they stay here forever.

Parallax web designing comes into the scenario at such a point of time
The overall mission of parallax design is to offer parallax scrolling, which would create a 2D impact wherein the foreground images will move faster than those in the background. This is otherwise termed as “asymmetrical scrolling.” The layering of speeds as the user moves across the website provides them with an immersive experience, ultimately keeping them awestruck by your website.
HTML and CSS3 combine together to weave this magic of fluidizing the web, engaging the end users and all together directing to a great website experience. The design components involved in parallax scrolling is minimal and this should be ideally applied to sites that are indeed too long to scroll. Apparently, websites with a lot of content when designed using parallax scrolling renders a great website experience as the users scroll through the enduring visual affects pulling them further.
But, before you shower your websites with parallax scrolling, here are a few things to consider:
1) SEO perspective
Your site will never be familiar to people or search engines, unless it has been optimized for the search engines, i.e., SEO done properly. So, when you are adding the parallax affect to your website, you need to ensure that it would benefit the SEO part too. As we have already discussed parallax scrolling is a great experience for sites that are unfolded into a long scroll, so the concept of splitting a website into multiple pages, with a lot of content does not happen here. So, when the number of pages are less, there will be lesser content, which means you can use only a few keywords, and ultimately this will result in your website being pushed down the ladder of the search engine result pages. When, the web page is longer, it takes longer to load, which will make its load time higher on hand-held devices such as mobile phones.
But, you need not worry. There are a number of parallax websites around the globe that ranks at the top position on the search engines, which means that there are some secret ingredients that will take you there even though it is not much appreciated from the SEO perspective by experts.
2) Time taken to load
We already discussed that when the webpage is longer, it will take longer to load especially on hand-held devices, such as the mobile phones. Websites that take more than 10 seconds drive away customers, which is the rule of the world of web. So, what can you do to ensure that it loads on time?
The aesthetic poweress of your site is something that has been driving people to it. But, it is this same aesthetic power that will cause the people to leave as they lose their patience while the page takes longer to load. This means that if there are heavy components such as high-resolution images, the chances of your site loading faster are minimal. The point is to introduce aesthetic elements on your site but it should be such that people should be ready to wait while the site loads no matter what. This means the design elements should be carefully placed.
3) Usability factor
You can never underestimate the power of a normal website in comparison with the parallax website when it comes to conveying the message of your business. There is a thin line between people trying to enjoy the beautiful experience of your parallax website while it offers them with an intuitive movement across. There are controversies rounding the use of parallax websites, wherein experts say that this is best suited when you have only portfolios to be exhibited or moreover, when you are trying to display what you are doing here. This doesn’t synch in with websites that are trying to sell products or services. When your users are trying to gather more information about who you are and checking to see for more details on the “About” page, there is just only one long page, which has very little or no information about who you are or what you are doing here.
In such cases, parallax scrolling does no good, rather ends cooking up confusion, which is not good for your website. This means that if your website is here to convey a message or provide more information about your products or services, it could create confusions. All this brings us to one single point, which says that parallax websites are best suited when you are trying to convey a new idea or message. The users can have fun while they are on your website because it has the parallax scrolling that gives them some food for thought.
How to ensure that whatever you have done will work?
1) Check whether the website has a story to tell
This is one of the most important phases of your website design. Since, it is one long page where the people have to scroll from top to bottom, this kind of a content display is going to fit well as people will find it interesting to read through. They do not have to switch over pages, but can just read it from top to bottom. Expression builders can be used to include expressions on your website and get your users to read through. This will keep them going and ensure that the reading gets interesting as they move through.
2) Guide them through
As we have already discussed the pair of animations might get annoying after a particular period of time. So, you must be ready to give them something interesting. As they scroll through your parallax website, ensure that the product or service or whatever message you have got for your people gets conveyed without creating a confusion for them as to what is to be done or leave them thinking where are they.
3) Mobile responsiveness
We have already seen that long scrolling websites do not act like they are mobile friendly, which could be harmful. When you have a website that doesn’t fit in your mobile device, most of the time, it happens that designers want to save themselves from the effort of making their site mobile responsive. And, in this while they are losing many a number of customers who would have otherwise turned up to them on mobile. All this in turn leads to bringing down your ranking as you lose your visitors, which Google doesn’t approve of.
4) Get real users to test it
It is necessary that you find out the pulse of your target audience. Their process of thinking differs from yours. You really do not know what they are looking for. You might have created an aesthetically powerful website, but then, how do you ensure that this is what they were expecting. Unless you get them test it and monitor and track their actions, how is it that you are going to ensure that the website that you have is what they want.
5) Don’t do these things
Like every other design process, here are a few things that you shouldn’t be doing when designing parallax websites:
- Design it without the bottomless scrolling effect
- Don’t trap the secondary elements with the parallax effect.
- Make it possible for your people to find the information they need.
These are some of the few things that you should keep an eye out for when designing parallax websites to ensure that everything works fine.

Will Responsive Design Takes Next Step in the Evolution?

Responsive design is essentially including in elements of design that enable a page to respond to the screen size, and gadget, to see that page. Rather than a mobile site, with its own URL, the URL is simply the same, and the page reworks to fit the screen. This is quite important for various reasons. While one of the important reasons for search engine optimization is responsive design, the positive effect on user experience is the essential advantage. Speed and visual appeal will be of greater benefits for the experience users too.

Originally, responsive design was just about fitting another screen size. It was nothing more, and nothing less. Most cell phones had comparable estimated screens, and the main tablet worth designing for was the iPad, which had only one screen measure. Presently we are seeing distinctive measured screens on cell phones and new tablets that are as much as two inches greater or smaller than their competitors. Design components must incorporate distinctive screen sizes to guarantee a uniform user experience across all devices rather than simply planning for one gadget.
Responsive Design is not About Devices
Getting a page to render appropriately on every gadget is vital, yet particular components on a page are likewise important. Responsive plan has neglected to consider essential components on a page like columns and advertisement placements. Moving sidebars and preserving menu placement to fit content onto screens is essential, yet pages need to keep up remarkable plan components and their capacity to adapt.
Still Responsive Design is the Future
Responsive website architecture surely has some imperative improvements to make. While it has imperfections, it is a ton superior to dedicated mobile websites, plug-ins and different workarounds that are frequently executed with an aim to make a site mobile-friendly.
Responsive web design (RWD) has turned into the standard for anyone who needs to make a good presence on the web. With the progression of time, best practices, guidelines and layout standards have been normally made, executed and acknowledged by most web developers and designers.
How will be a Responsive Design Analyst is Considered?
Each task is not quite the same as all others, and as a rule the main characteristics are unique. In this way, the architecture and design ought to be exceptional as well. This is the primary motivation behind why standard guidelines of responsive design doesn’t work for everyone, and a profound examination of each project is required with an aim to take full benefit of responsive web design. Now, another position may assume an important role: every project needs a person who can investigate the content and structure and help in finding a balance between the treatment of data and responsiveness.
A Step Closer to Awesome UX (User Experience)
One of the key difficulties for any responsive design analyst is the making of accurate structures to reduce or avoid data that could really have the effect. In order to keep your most recent post on first, there is a propensity to expel alternate containers from the primary column of the desktop format when contracting to fit the smaller screens. For the most part, such other containers incorporate data of your main advertisers: no sponsor might want to see their advertisement going out from the main shot of the site — that isn’t what they are paying for, is it? Consequently, a planned content placement is a must in the responsive design process.
It is a fact that that responsive design has been advancing because of the consistent improvement of gadgets with access to the web and the need to show the exact layout of the website on those distinctive gadgets. Without losing that sight, it’s an ideal opportunity to begin giving more significance to content placement and its effect on viewers, but this work can’t be done by a single person — it requests a particular individual or group, in fact, set to break down and consider a lot of factors abridged in target, content type and in addition structure and importance of the information to show.
Moreover, such groups or people must have the capacity to make an exact set of structures for each resolution and have clear and effective communicational skills to express their thoughts and structures to the design and development groups. This will help in giving the project a responsive design plan and a strong content placing which is flexible.
How responsivity analysis is related to content choreography?
So do you know what content choreography is?
It is nothing but giving more importance to content while designing responsive layouts. This was introduced by Trent Walton in 2011. One of the initial steps of this idea is to set up content priorities, and once that is done, content may begin moving once again the design. You can see this basic approach which embodies precisely how structure and progressive system is broken and content is revamped on the premise of need.
Utilizing this technique, it is not important to place content horizontally in a same order when transposed. But it is placed following some rules that are preset according to the each content importance.
Thus in order to resolve the issue of predictable behavior of boxes when resizing to the resolution of mobile, content choreography can be used as well. Let’s consider two phases: when the horizontally arranged content is transposed to vertical, the Ad will lose its privileged place and hidden on small screens before applying content choreography. When it is applied and the horizontal arrangement is transposed to vertical according to its importance, as a result Ad has not lost its place and will stay on top irrespective of the resolution of devices. Content choreography has been more advanced with responsive Ads and it is known as Stretch. Stretch is not just about changing position with relevance but also changing ads must have better appearance in smaller resolutions too to worth any foreground sponsor with their investment.
There is no predefined plan for content and each content must be treated in a different way and this is why special position must be implemented in web design process.

What’s the point in owning a website when it doesn’t drive traffic? You wouldn’t want to even try to make it grow. According to KPCB US and global trends 2015 report, time spent by users on mobile has considerably risen to 51% compared to 42% on desktop. This means that with at least two trillion searches on Google every passing year, over half of those searches come from mobile. On a similar note, when a user tries to search for your website and doesn’t find it on his smartphone, it means that you aren’t harnessing your site’s traffic effectively. End of the day, you’re losing sales and potential customers.
If you want to engage and convert the main demographic who are responsible for driving maximum traffic, then optimizing your website for mobile is clearly the right option.
2. Customers Love Increased User Experience
When you decide to go mobile, you’re providing a much better experience to your users. How?
A user prefers mobile over her laptop to browse a product because it’s convenient and saves lot of time. Users have a chance to visit and explore their favorite sites, read and shop anytime and on any device. With a mobile optimized website, you are providing them a seamless experience with easy navigation, fast loading pages and great content. Make sure you don’t compromiseon any functionality compared to your desktop website, so that visitors don’t leave your site too soon.
By providing people with a personalized user experience, you create loyal customers who want to stick to you because they find you credible, reliable and well, useful.
3. You Stay Ahead Of Your Competitors
Remember, your customers aren’t the only ones who love mobile. You have your competitors who are quite aware of the needin keeping up to the latest trends of technology and doing business by studying the user behavior. You don’t want your customer to choose your competitor over you. According to a survey by Clutch, only 56% of all websites are responsive. This means that there’s a good chance for you stay way ahead of your competitors, as probably almost half of your competitors don’t have a mobile friendly site.
Also, if you have an eCommerce website, you’re risking more than other businesses by not opting to go mobile because. Why? Well, nearly 67% of customers want to buy products from a mobile friendly site and more than two billion mobile users will make a mCommerce transaction by 2017. Hence, in order to survive in such a competitive online ecosystem, optimizing your site for mobile and doing it the right way can help you gain an edge.
4. Harness The Power Of Social Media Through Mobile
Be it establishing your brand, engaging with your customers, building more customers and strengthening your customer relationship, advertising or even conducting surveys, social media is king. According to HubSpot, 80% of marketers agreed that social media efforts increased their traffic. Interestingly, around the same percentage of social media time is spent by users on mobile devices.
As social media continues to grow rapidly, a non-responsive site can disappoint and frustrate your customers. It will also waste your investment on paid ads, hurt your company’s reputation and brand image, as users are continuously involved and engaged on social media. A negative experience can have a much greater impact than you think. The best part is that you can harness the power of social media by targeting your mobile users. You get to know more about your customers’ demands and interests and tailor your products to suit their needs.
5. Lastly, You Should Do It Because Google Loves It
Like it or not, you got to please Google to rank well in SEO. Last year came the announcement that Google is tweaking its algorithm to allow mobile friendly sites to rank higher and will penalize those that aren’t responsive or mobile friendly. This is one of the most significant changes from Google which came into effect due to the strong demographic of mobile users.

What Are Web Fonts and Why Are They Important?

Remember the good old days when print media caught more attention than any other broadcasting media’s including the T.V. and the web. Could be that those days the internet was just emerging and the only media that was familiar to people was the print. The designers in those days had an extensive arena for experimentation. Probably they had the freedom to use a variety of fonts, colors and style as per their desire as there was no particular standard set by anyone when designing for the print.

But, with the evolution of the web, the use of fonts merged into a tricky state. An analysis on how designers deal with this state of the web reveals that more than half the designers prefer using the custom fonts.
So, what are actually these web fonts and where do they come in the bigger picture?
Suppose your client specifically asks for a particular font style and your computer doesn’t support the same except for the basic standard fonts, such as Arial, Times New Roman and Calibri. In such a situation, how would you power the application with the font that the client has requested for?
This is where the custom fonts come into the scenario. You could use the web fonts. But, how do you do that without installing it on your system? You can use this web font, which can be accessed over a server on which the specific file is being hosted. This is where it starts. The font will be brought up and loaded onto the browser and the designer can view it the desired way.
These fonts are flexible and can be optimized to fit into your expectations while being used over the web. You can add up the compression features that help in causing the web apps to be lighter, which ultimately triggers the loading speed.
Here are the four different types of web fonts:
- Web Open Font Format (WOFF)
- WOFF2
- Embedded Open Type (EOT)
- True Type Font (TFF), which is the most commonly preferred web fonts.
The first and second type work well across web pages as well as the WOFF2 supports in bringing about an improvisation in compression.
Another advantageous aspect of these font types from web is that if you have any other font that has been purchased or downloaded over the web, you could transform or reformat those into this type of font. The only thing you would need is to get it done via a site with proof of license and also, it must possess a package of fonts in any of the above specified formats.
But, before getting this format coded into the CSS of the particular site, you should take into account a few factors such as the speed, availability and the compatibility of the browsers that will be used here.
Operating:
Let us take a look at how the web fonts proceed with their functionality:
The CSS elements that style your websites provide the browser with details on how it should be bringing up the visual components of your site and exhibiting these. These components include everything that is meant to create a visual impact from the designer’s point of view such as the fonts, colors, textures and even the spacing. Generally, these fonts are tagged with a font tag embedded in the CSS, which helps your browsers to identify the various sections in your text starting from the header.
The behavior of the CSS part lies with the designer. You can decide whether you wish to have a ladder of fonts in your CSS book. This is essential in a situation where one of the fonts is not being rendered, but instead can be replaced by another one in the array, which usually happens to be the sans-serif.
When a particular font is not supported by the system in use, the browser has the intelligence to proceed with the next one that follows. This continues until the browser finds the one that the computer supports. If none of the fonts are available, “sans-serif,” which is present at the bottom will be picked and displayed.
How do designers tag a web font that is being used in a particular scenario? Yes, “@font-face” is the declaration that is defined in the CSS book to look up to the fonts that will be used here. You can either depend on the Type Kit or Google Fonts or host it locally or access it via a third-party server.
Web fonts come with a set of highlights which makes it the most preferred typos for the web. It provides with higher search rankings, enhances performance and also, helps in building a brand consistency, which is most important.
Here are a few things that need to be examined when using web fonts:
1. The speed
This is something we all want for our website. How do we ensure that this is done? We do not like loading too many HTTP requests onto the server which happens when multiple fonts are used. So, it would be an excellent idea to choose just the four fonts that we discussed earlier in the font options as this will help in bringing about a few HTTP requests.
2. Challenges with third-party hosting sites
It is always necessary to have a web safe font, specifically if you are being supported by a third-party server. If the server goes down, you are done. So, it’s necessary that you have the web safe font for back up always.
Browser compatibility matters:
As they say not all browsers have been designed to be compatible with all your design fantasies. So, when it comes to the font that you are using it is a game of luck. You are fortunate, if they have a browser that supports the WOFF or WOFF2 fonts (don’t worry most of the browsers support these fonts). It is good to always have a web safe font listed out in the options.
Why do you need a web safe font?
As we have already discussed there might be situations when a third-party server fails you or maybe the viewer’s system doesn’t support the intended font. But, in those situations how do you manage?
You need a back up right?
There is this invisible text that will last for few seconds, say 3 to 30 seconds, which is the time during which the browser is looking for a default font to be displayed. This is where the web safe font comes into action.
Finally, always makes sure that the appropriate path is specified in the CSS
The appropriate location of the font needs to be always specified in CSS; otherwise it would be an error.
